De Blimp – Seven

De Blimp are a band from Ontario, Canada. Their songs borrow heavily from psychedelic rock and blues, while also incorporating a wide range of styles from avant-garde to new-wave. While being a relatively new band on the scene, their music is stark and already making some waves. Rightfully so; their music is impressive.

-From my review of Kill Artist

Tripped Out Hard is a delirious psychedelic track that boasts impressive instrumentation, though sounds somewhat amateurish. This is perhaps due to the lackadaisical vocals somewhat sounding awkward in the mix. Despite its flaws, it’s quite enjoyable. Inhale the Chemtrail (Every Morning) is extremely zappa-esque to a fault; it works best as a joke. De Dancing Man is perhaps the worst song on this album; it’s painstakingly ordinary despite its attempts to differentiate itself in the vocal department and the serene closure. Bonged experiments with non-conventional rhythms, though sounds disjointed. Beaned’s instrrumentals are a charming distraction; much could be said about Codeine. Eight continues the vein of unconventional instrumentation and is quite spectacular; the blues rythms are fluently intertwined in the articulate psychedelic soundscape. These instrumentals are certainly the highlight of the album. Deep Limp further descends into madness in an interesting fashion. A Decision is a beautiful, bittersweet finale. Garden Gnomes (Also Known As GG), Floating Downstem, Ghost Buster, De Creep, Mang and De Purple Men are all somewhat enjoyable, though dreadfully formulaic.

Unlike the exquisite Kill Artist, Seven lacks clarity and refinement. These songs feel more like experiments than coherent pieces. Furthermore, there is hardly a thread to tie these pieces together. While I appreciate the Ween-like eccentricities, the charm of De Blimp cannot carry the low points of the album. De Blimp would benefit greatly from quality control; though if their latest release is anything to go by, I’m sure they’ve learnt their lesson.
