Tracey Trance – Fountain

There’s something extra charming about someone releasing a bedroom recorded indie record on tape that a studio release can’t capture. Very rarely is a lack of production the main factor in limiting an album’s experience. Despite the production being abysmal on Fountain, it’s hardly a hindrance to the jovial vibe; one could even say it greatly enhances it. Released January 2010, the album was late to the tape-deck scene, but worthy enough to stand out.

Fountain is an interesting record in which is ticks all the wrong boxes, though ends up being memorable and pleasurable. Perhaps it’s due to the fact it was recorded in abhorrent conditions, or because of its whimsical vibe; nonetheless, the record is sweet and enjoyable. The aesthetics can only carry it so far, though, as the album is also frustratingly repetitive. Ideas are also repeated throughout the album; I found myself comparing songs to see how they differed. If one doesn’t mind repetition, they’ll find plenty to enjoy.

Interestingly enough, the album works best as background music. Somehow it sounds nostalgic without every relying on sampling. One could almost say it sounds like one is daydreaming in their youth. It’s only on closer inspection the album suffers, mostly in the compositional department. Worth listening to if you enjoy The Savage Taterbug or similar tape-recorded acts.
