CLUB ORO - " GET WELL SOON " (demoz)

Club Oro are an exceptional musical sextet from Las Angeles, California. The following tape is from a live session and should not represent the band’s creative output; their official releases are of much higher quality and exceptionally more creative. Typically, I would not review someone’s unfinished works, though despite this tape being compiled of demos, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s still most certainly worth your time. It’s a taste of Club Oro’s exceptional talent.

Sorry opens the mixtape with elegance and style. The production is not wasted on such an angelic, yet down-to-Earth voice; it’s blissful throughout. Box City is a genuinely delightful Portishead-esque song. The production is sublime, and the incorporation of electronics are gorgeous. The playfulness of the track is fantastic, and the ending of the track is spectacular. Permissions and invitations are not as strong as the opening two tracks, though they are nice 80’s throwbacks. Orange County is a genuinely delightful, albeit short track. Lovely electronics and keys subtly boost Refrigerator to great heights; if only it were more fleshed out. Orange Soda homes a gentle, yet captivating rhythm section. Aircraft is perfectly moody and an appropriate length; it bleeds exceptionally well into the next track. Despite being a mixtape of demos, the tape is impeccably well structured. Fruit Salad is pleasant, though not as strong as the other tracks. The drumming throughout No Diggity (Yes Diggity) is immaculate and gives the song a great, distinct personality. A slick production does much the same for Rat Trap and March Madness; the latter being especially noteworthy due to its well-balanced experimentation. Ghostride and C*tholic Guilt are solid tracks, but don’t offer any new ideas nor do they differentiate much from the rest of the album. Is It Fun? Is a solid ending to the album though; lush and perfectly balanced.

Whereas a band like Alabama Shakes annoy me due to their over-done riffs, obnoxious attitude and serious pretentiousness, Club Oro genuinely delight me due to their passion, experimentation and humbleness. While the band often sticks to pop conventions a little too strongly, there’s a lot of charm and personality that make it a worthwhile listen. If their latest impeccable singles are a taste of what’s to come, I am expecting true greatness. There’s not a single bad song here; if only they were more fleshed out.

Average

Give them a listen. I highly recommend the first two songs at least:

More importantly, listen to Cavities by Club Oro.
