Caesar Nixon - Axis Mundi

Caesar Nixon, former project of Sun is Poison, is what one would expect Will to sound in his earlier days. While the style is much the same, the execution is far more amateur, and may be off putting to those used to his sweet new sound. Regardless, though while rougher than Will’s earlier works, his early projects stand among the artist’s best work.

Will’s honesty shines bright on Forward, beautifully accompanied by its lush instrumentals and charming melody. There’s a beautiful fuzz delivery towards the outro that also graces songs such as Hell Hath No Fury and Nothing Feels Good At All. Ars Goetia is one of the artist’s best songs, for sure. The lyricism, aesthetic and fragmented vocals all come together into a beautiful suite that’s both emotionally honest and sonically alluring. The charm continues right on through If I Could Do It Again, I Would. As with most songs on the album, the song is rather quiet the entire way through, only raising the volume to maximise emotion. The closer also benefits from this technique incredibly well and ends the album memorably. There’s sadly quite a bit of fluff towards the end, though; such as the first three-quarters of Curtain Call, and the majority of The Corner. Moreover, some of the production hurts these songs, as they tend to clip. Very few moments in the preceding tracks also suffer due to their recording condition, such as the opener Bottle Rocket.

One could easily presume that these songs may have had a larger impact had they been recorded and released by modern day Sun is Poison, but I disagree. Axis Mundi, while merely a collection of non-connected singles, greatly benefits from its underdog origins. It’s certainly not without its flaws, though the vulnerable artist’s performance greatly makes up for it. Furthermore, these songs emotionally have a greater impact than any recent Sun is Poison project.
