Future Baroque – Wheel of Dynasty

Future Baroque is an experimental, synthwave baroque pop singer from Vancouver, British Columbia. The synthetics are all standard on his latest release Wheel of Dynasty, but what Future Baroque does with them is quite unique. The artist mixes baroque pop with retrowave synthpunk, and the results are better than they sound in theory.

Firelight is where the artist truly starts to shine. The songwriting is unique, experimental, and most importantly relatively progressive. The album is not quite as fluent as exhibiting range, such as during America and All That We Are. This is because the artist very rarely strays from pop formulas; he’s greatly limited by the conventions of his own genres. As a result, the slower songs fail to make an impact, and are quite tedious compared to their counterparts. The exception is easily Clouds, though; this is mostly due to the fact it rarely repeats its ideas, and constantly dazzles the listener with fresh new ideas and shimmering sounds. Lastly, the vocoder is off on Digital Saviour. The unedited vocals are quite splendid on their own; it’s a wonder why Future Baroque didn’t stick to them entirely.

What’s most surprising about Wheel of Dynasty is how well it works. This is mostly due to the mesmerising vocals by Beryl Bach.
