Cleanest Hippie – Have a Nice Day

Cleanest Hippie is an impressive solo artist from… Earth? His music is a frenzy meditation on the surreal edge of jazztronica, swiftly alternating between chillwave and jam-fire rock. His debut EP is a frantic arrangement that’s missing its own personality, but makes it for it with its impressive talent and splendid spectacle of dazzling instrumentation.

Cleanest Hippie’s execution is incredibly admirable, especially during the longer tracks such as Voccnth. While the instrumentation is missing a distinguishable characteristic, the vibe is masterful on tracks such as Gnose, which wonderfully home in on Hippie’s gorgeous atmosphere. Bazz boasts impressive percussion, though is marred by a somewhat overly conventional melody. Much the same could be said for Clockwork and Bad and Good, which tend to repeat themselves. What the second half of the EP is missing is a sense of progression; something that makes the first half (and especially the first song) stand out. Thankfully, the instrumentation is always tightly executed, resulting in a pleasurable listen.

Have a Nice Day’s major flaw is its lack of identity; much of the album successfully rides on its style, but its aesthetic is not unique. More variety in style and instrumentation could go a long way in future. The album works both when it’s faster paced, or when it slows things down. Being a solo artist makes the work far more impressive; though Cleanest Hippie is competing with other full-fledged bands; his work will need to break conventions a little more to standout. Nonetheless, as a debut, Cleanest Hippie has successfully proven he is capable of producing something truly remarkable.
