Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack – Let

Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack released Let on June 18th, 2013. The album is deeply flawed, though may be of interest to a fan of the artist.

Firstly, amscray! and a line falls on two lines both contain a very neat mixture of acoustic and electronica; the former a neat introduction of WGWGSA’s krautrock IDM elements. Let (2) contains some of the best instrumentals of Tim’s career, though the fairly standard composition that doesn’t quite let it flourish. Much could be said for the remaining tracks. let (1) is well written in comparison, though it lacks energy. Thanks has a fluffy first half with enough solid ideas to warrant its length, though despite the commendable build-up during the second half, its crescendo doesn’t satisfy. Suspenduous contains neat instrumentals, but is overly sentimental. The same could be said about at the end of the day you're still fresh off the bus, with its otherwise luscious soundscape. Six + six = seven has some cool twangy instrumentals, but a lame sample throughout. As with subsequent WGWGSA albums, instruments are key, though the songwriting is missing the punch.

Let is a deeply personal album, and unfortunately its vocal delivery lessens the experience. While the singer is consistently on key, his vocals never add anything to the soundscapes, often getting in the way. It’s clear WGWGSA was still figuring things out on Let, and there are certainly cool moments throughout, though its length and self-indulgence make it hard to recommend even for a fan. Nonetheless, the instrumentals are still spectacular; even in his experimental days, Tim was a master producer. It’s a shame he wasn’t the strongest songwriter.
