Gremlens – Timonium

Timonium was released January 10th, 2022 and stands as one of Gremlens’ best output. This is mostly due to its reliance on acoustic elements and slick implementation of synthetics.

The Wind Up opens the album with an admirable barrage of noise. Chaotic guitars and electronics blend superfluously. Unlike other Gremlen albums, the majority of songs rarely rely on their samples to progress; instead utilising them to add the delirium. Modern Elephant strikes the perfect balance between lunacy and claustrophobia. I Got My Hat’s non-chalant sample use amicably complements the cluttering soundscape. Get Some On You? is another standout track; while its noise is nothing new, it’s vibrant. Smallest Prayer’s serene soundscape adds a beautiful balance to the chaotic, surrounding tracks, and flows perfectly into the placid You've Been Flirting Again (II). Unfortunately, there’s some fluff. Timonium #2 rocks some cool guitars but goes nowhere in the songwriting department. The same could be said for Woah and the closer.

If anything, the album cover doesn’t reflect the album’s material well. There’s much attention to detail, unlike the plain and austere cover. It’s also underwhelmingly short, and lacking in innovation. Regardless, Timonium is a standout in Gremlens discography, and worth seeking out.
