Dancers Before the Threshold of the Great Worlds - The Great Siege of Deep Heaven Against the Oyarsa of Earth

Dancers Before the Threshold of the Great Worlds are a fascinating experimental progressive metal band that incorporates mesmerizing free-jazz and avant-garde into their chaotic and enthralling suites. Their debut, The Great Siege of Deep Heaven Against the Oyarsa of Earth, is gripping and immaculate.

There are mild inconsistencies in the mixing, yet The Great Siege of Deep Heaven Against the Oyarsa of Earth is consistently charming throughout. The prog-rock elements are used tastefully, as are the math-rock rudiments. What may be most impressive is the foundational framework being cemented in free-jazz; drums tidily reign supreme through the lavish soundscapes, while the guitar work masterfully respects the band’s use of space. Unfortunately, the album ends much too abruptly; though its perfectly fitting as a showcase.

On a personal note, I am unsure of how “innovative” the fusion of free-jazz and progressive metal are on The Great Siege of Deep Heaven Against the Oyarsa of Earth; though I am sure of one thing – if Dancers can deliver an entire album as consistent and fulfilling as their debut EP, they will irrefutably soar.
