Lip Critic – Kill Lip Critic
Lip Critic are an electronic breakbeat punk band from New York, New York. Blending the realms of punk and hip-hop Lip Critic released their debut Kill Lip Critic on June 25th, 2019. Kill Lip Critic is an admirable debut, though it suffers from two problems that future releases improved upon.
Firstly. the songwriting is comparatively uneven between the track-listing. At times the songs detour into ecstatic, divine electronic symphonies of madness, though far too often it sticks to standard punk-rock conventions. This is a shame, because the album is carried by its marriage of dark percussion and psychedelic synthetics. If only the album explored its delirious instrumentals as much as the explosive section of the opener, Been Born. Another track that also does it exceptionally well is Piece by Piece, with its unexpected her jovial finale. Secondly, the execution is inconsistent. When the vocals are loud, they’re powerful, such as through (once again) the powerful opener Been Born. Sadly, they falter during the simpler verses, such as the quieter sections of Entry Level Stud.
Most of all, as with other Lip Critic releases, it’s far too short. Regardless, the album holds up if you’re a fan of Lip Critic, though you’re better off starting with their most recent releases.
