S&M - S&M are The Blueberry Lollipop Jolly Association

S&M - Simone Ercole & Martina Vesta are an alternative psychedelic pop duo who’s works borderline on avant garde, folk, indie pop and symphonic rock. S&M are The Blueberry Lollipop Jolly Association exists on the fringe of childlike expression and matured mental insanity. Much like the Resident’s cryptic sound collages, S&M combines an extensive, impressive plethora of ideas into a concise, digestible EP.

Secret Candy #1 is the ultimate opener, and Secret Candy #2 is ferocious and raw, incorporating elements of prog rock and baroque instrumentation; a piece that would easily sit on a greatly admired Pink Floyd record. The progression is admirable, as is its wonderfully exuberant outro. Sadly, the remaining Candy songs are undeveloped, and barely have much to offer. While some moments are certainly alluring, such as the psychedelic riffs of Secret Candy #6, they aren’t fleshed out enough to truly absorb the listener. Outside the more developed tracks are pieces that add to the atmosphere but offer little in terms of climatic satisfaction. All The World Is Made of Glass is the ultimate testament to this notion; its drums don’t build to anything noteworthy, and the track cuts off immediately. The Things We Forgot demonstrates the band is clearly capable of fleshing out their songs and delivering their ideas in a tighter manner; shame it relies on pop conventions.

Nevertheless, S&M are The Blueberry Lollipop Jolly Association has all the right ingredients, and an admirable amount of energy. One could go on as far to say it successfully cultivates its own personality amidst the cannon of psychedelic rock. Sadly, it’s a little under-baked and disappointingly short.
